130 Labour Days and counting: All in a day’s work

Labour Day was first recognized as a statutory holiday in Canada in September, 1894, which was 130 years ago.

You know what YOU can accomplish in one work day, but let’s pay tribute to the daily accomplishments of “labourers”, workers, stakeholders, associates, and team members at some of our client facilities. I cruised through our files of physical and cognitive demands analyses to create this list of daily work accomplishments for a variety of jobs.

On Monday, talk to your friends or family about the physical and mental work associated with these jobs.

In a single work day, ONE person can:

  • Operate a machine that wraps 8100 packages of paper napkins.
  • Trim 290 foam car headrests using scissors.
  • Transfer 33500 cookies from a conveyor into trays
  • Provide sales support and service for 65 customers, over the phone
  • Provide wound, catheter, ostomy, IV, or injection care to 21 patients in a clinic.
  • Complete a task analysis and collect most of the observations, photographs, and measurements for a physical and cognitive demands analysis (Oh, that’s an ergonomist!)
  • Use a forklift to transfer 223 containers from shipping containers to the appropriate warehouse location.
  • Operate a city bus, making 15 stops during every 30-minute route cycle.
  • Clean 26 rooms on the fourth floor of a hospital.
  • Shovel and tamp down asphalt into 20 potholes at various locations.
  • Use a knife to remove one thigh bone from 5050 chickens.
  • Operate a loader to transfer blasted stone from a quarry to 90 haul trucks.
  • Transfer 6200 foam seat cushions from a conveyor to a hanger system.
  • Facilitate an 8-hour Ergonomics Design workshop (Oh, that’s us too!)
  • Receive guests, perform administrative duties, and process 20 cash transactions.
  • Transfer 475 boxes of shortening from a conveyor to a pallet.
  • Remove, package, and palletize 96 spools of wire from a spooling machine, and load 3 large stands of wire to the machine.
  • Assemble 7025 cardboard boxes.
  • Unload, inspect, clean and package 620 rubber gaskets.
  • Sort 1000 bags of dirty laundry.
  • Remove, inspect, label and rack 3700 smoked roasts.
  • Provide daily personal care for 12 residents, including bathing, clothing, feeding, toileting, transferring between bed and chair, and making beds.
  • Drive a sweeper truck to remove debris from sidewalks, returning to the yard to dump debris and refill the water tank every 2 hours.
  • Determine the sex of 12915 baby chicks.
  • Load 6000 bakery trays into a dishwasher.
  • Complete two office ergonomics assessments, including survey review, observations, photos, interview, adjustments and recommendations (Oh, that’s also us!)
