Hot cider
1. Pour 2-4 litres of fresh apple cider into a large pot or slow cooker.
2. Add:
• 2-4 cinnamon sticks
• 5-10 allspice berries
• 6-12 whole cloves
• 3-6 pods of cardamom
• ¼ tsp of nutmeg
• 1 thinly sliced orange
• 1-2 tablespoons of brown sugar or maple syrup
*All of these add-in ingredients are optional – leave out those that don’t appeal to you! You can “taylor” this recipe to your group’s taste. You can serve the cider with the spices floating, or strain out the spices before serving the cider, or put the spices in a tea ball, before floating them in the pot.
3. Bring to a simmer, and serve, steaming warm.
Special occasion? Rim your mugs before filling. Run the edge of a lemon slice around the rim, dip the rim into a saucer of course brown sugar, and let dry for an hour or so, before your guests arrive.
Extra-special occasion for your adult guests? Add a shot of one of these: Sour Puss liquor (apple or raspberry), Dr. McGullicuddy’s Butterscotch liquor, Fireball Cinnamon whiskey, Sortilege Maple whiskey, or dark rum.
